10 Risk Factors for Recurring BPPV

Author: Cheryl Wylie, PT

So what is the difference between BPPV Treatment and Traditional Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)?

BPPV Treatments are maneuver based treatments that move crystals from one part of our inner ear (where they shouldn't be) to another part of our inner ear (where they belong). Your symptoms are often resolved fairly quickly, within 1-3 sessions.

VRT is most often used to treat vestibular disorders that have resulted in a loss of vestibular function. It works through home exercises which challenge your system to improve vestibular function or generate compensation strategies to replace that lost function. This take longer to see improvements, at least 6-8 weeks.

BOTH of these types of treatments are done by Vestibular Physiotherapists! So when you come and see us, we will determine which treatment is right for you (and guess what, sometimes it's even a combination!)

Remember, this is a simplified explanation, and there are always exceptions, so keep this in mind.
