Understanding Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of therapy intended to alleviate problems caused by vestibular disorders and concussions, including vertigo, dizziness, vision changes, lightheadedness, imbalance and falls.

With a vestibular disorder, there are changes to our vestibular system, resulting in feelings of dizziness and imbalance. VRT works by strengthening the bond between our body, eyes, brain and inner ear in a safe and controlled manner. Depending on your vestibular-related symptoms, therapy may include:

Adaptation | Gaze Stabilization | Habituation | Balance Training | Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers | Gait Training | Lifestyle Strategies

By working with these methods, we can reduce your symptoms, achieve your specific goals and increase your overall quality of life.

At Healing Vertigo, we work with you one to one to create your customized exercise-based program, developed from our clinical assessment together. We use a hybrid model of care, providing both in-person and virtual sessions. Virtual sessions are through a secure service which is HIPPA PIPEDA, and PHIPA compliant, ensuring your data remains private and safe.

Virtual / Online Physiotherapy

The development of online video conferencing has improved access to specialized healthcare worldwide. Through virtual platforms, we are able to complete full assessments and treatment programs with you through your computer or mobile device.

With virtual physiotherapy, steps have been taken to transition all aspects of our in-person physiotherapy assessment and treatment into the virtual platform, with zero compromise in the quality and effectiveness you will receive as a patient. We have partnered with Jane to provide you a safe and secure telehealth experience, which is HIPAA, PIPEDA, and PHIPA compliant, so you know your data remains private at all times. Jane has also maximized the patient-practitioner experience, with online scheduling, virtual exercise tracking, and easy payments which can all be done from your device or laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Virtual Physiotherapy

Does insurance cover virtual physiotherapy?

Yes! Our virtual physiotherapy services are covered under "physiotherapy" for all Extended Healthcare Plans (EHP). To our knowledge, no claims have been denied, however we recommend you contact your EHP provider to confirm your coverage details.

How do I join a virtual physiotherapy call?

You will receive an email from Healing Vertigo with a link to join the call. Simply click the link and it will open a video conferencing browser on your computer or mobile device. You may be asked permission to allow the site access to your video and microphone, which you want to select "Allow". Controls for video and microphone can be found at the bottom of the call and adjusted anytime.

How do I prepare for a virtual appointment?

First, decide what device you will use for the call. You can use:

  • A computer with a webcam

  • A laptop

  • A tablet or smartphone

Set your device up so that you can do a face-to-face interview and you can move away to show your full body.

You will also want to have the following items available:

  • A bed/sofa/floor and a pillow

  • A set of 5lbs weights (or have two 5lbs of groceries in a bag available)

  • A piece of paper and a pen

If you have any questions prior to your appointment, contact us, we are happy to help!
